Inventing Our Future

Guest Post by Dick Warn

Recently I wrote about “forward thinking.” Now I want to take that thinking to a higher level. Everyday our thoughts are building our beliefs, and our beliefs determine what we become. No exceptions.

Thomas Edison, American inventor and founder of General Electric, said, “To invent, you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.”

You may not see it this way, but you are inventing your future every day. There is no such thing as an uncreative mind. We can all daydream in amazing colors.

Stephen R. Covey, American author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, said, “Learn to live out of your imagination, not your history.”

Most people, when asked about their future, think first about where they have been, what they have done, and what they currently have. Without knowing it, these people are establishing extreme limits on themselves by thinking inside the box, rather than outside of it. To achieve new heights we must change our mind and think in new ways.

This explains why many individuals suffering from low self-esteem never seem to climb out of their pits of depression. They don’t believe they can; therefore, they see no reason to try.

Napoleon Hill, American author of Think and Grow Rich, said, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.”

At first I didn’t believe that. I had to read more books than I can remember to finally see with absolute assurance how true it really is. We become what we think about, and our deepest beliefs determine our upper limits.

Books have opened amazing doors for me, and they can do the same for you.
